A day of mental health care at Cavendish University

A day of mental health care at CavendisUniversity.

Counselor Vivian explains to the students

On the 31st of October, 2024 Cavendish students attend a mental health workshop at the main campus in Siyani.

What is mental health? Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. Another definition would be that Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community.

About 50 students from different faculties attended this workshop in hopes of achieving guidance on mental health. Why attend such a workshop one would say? Well in the world of nowadays it’s hard to have a stable mental health with all the natural disasters and man created problems so with this in mind many students wanted to know more about the prevention and treatment of mental health disorders.

Madam Vivian and Ruth who are mental health counselors with many years of experience under their belts were the speakers of the day. The first speaker madam Vivian highlighted a lot concerning this issue of mental health. “ One has to know his or herself very well in order to understand their mental situation”. Says Vivian she continues to say mental health affects everyone regardless of age, background or circumstances, so being aware of common health issues like depression, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, trauma and PTSD among others could help you seek help quickly. So for one to survive all these common disorders, one has to know his or herself. “In order to be mentally healthy, communicate effectively , recognize signs of mental issues, develop self compassion, practice self forgiveness and most importantly have self awareness”. Says the speaker of the day counselor Vivian. As a student and most importantly a youth, one has to know and understand signs of mental un wellness and receive help quickly. Signs like excessive anxiety and worry, fatigue, restlessness, then physical signs like  headaches, weight loss and also psychological signs like social withdrawal, compulsive behavior, difficulty in concentration. If you ever see yourself with  these signs then communicate to a professional or the people close to you. There are ways for preventing these mental issues for example being mindful and meditating, seeking social support, journaling and expressive writing or even boundary setting.

Towards end of the section  counselor Ruth took the students through a very satisfying meditation that lasted 5 minutes. Issac a software engineer student says the having went through the feeling of meditation now he would do it a his free time in order to relax his mind clear stress.
