Since its inception in 2008, Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) has emerged as a premier private university, nurturing generations of leaders and professionals across the African continent. The institution's success story is deeply intertwined with the visionary leadership of its Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors who steered it through pivotal moments.  

 

Founding and Early Years (2008–2014)  

Cavendish University Uganda was established in 2008, marking the arrival of innovative and student-centered education in Uganda. The university’s mission was to provide accessible, high-quality education, preparing students for the competitive global market.  

 

The first Chancellor, H.E. Benjamin Mkapa, the former President of Tanzania, brought unparalleled prestige to the institution. His diplomatic vision and commitment to Pan-African development resonated deeply with the university's ideals. Under his leadership, CUU gained regional recognition as an institution that blended academic rigor with real-world relevance.  

 

During this period,Prof. Ketrine Nyakaisiki Salati, CUU’s inaugural Vice-Chancellor, laid the foundation for academic excellence. Her tenure focused on developing a robust curriculum, emphasizing critical thinking and innovation. She was instrumental in attracting faculty who were both academically accomplished and industry-experienced.  

 

Consolidation and Growth (2014–2020)  

In 2014, CUU entered a phase of expansion and consolidation. H.E. Benjamin Mkapa’s term as Chancellor ended, and he was succeeded by H.E. Goodluck Jonathan, the former President of Nigeria. His tenure as Chancellor (2014–2020) was marked by efforts to strengthen the university’s international partnerships, particularly with institutions across Africa and beyond.  

 

During this time, Prof. John Mugisha assumed the role of Vice-Chancellor (2014–2019). Under his stewardship, the university expanded its academic programs, including the launch of professional and graduate courses in business, public health, and law. Prof. Mugisha also focused on improving the university's infrastructure, introducing state-of-the-art facilities to support both learning and research.  

 

In 2019, CUU welcomed Prof. David Mutabanura as Vice-Chancellor. Prof. Mutabanura’s vision for digital transformation became particularly significant during the COVID-19 pandemic. The university transitioned seamlessly to online learning, ensuring continuity and accessibility for students across Uganda and the region.  

 

Modernization and Global Integration (2020–2024)  

In 2020, the mantle of Chancellor passed to H.E. Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda, Zambia’s first President, whose tenure was brief but impactful. As a champion of education and youth empowerment, Dr. Kaunda’s leadership inspired CUU to deepen its focus on community engagement and sustainable development initiatives.  

 

In 2021,H.E. Dr. Margaret Nantongo Zziwa, the former Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly, became the university’s first female Chancellor. Her tenure (2021–2024) has been transformative, emphasizing gender inclusivity, research, and regional integration.  

 

The current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Maud Kamatenesi,  who took office in 2021, has continued to build on CUU’s legacy. With a focus on interdisciplinary research and entrepreneurship, Prof. Kamatenesi has positioned CUU as a leader in producing graduates who are not just job seekers but job creators.  

 

Achievements and Legacy 

Over the years, Cavendish University Uganda has earned a reputation for academic excellence, producing graduates who excel in fields such as law, health sciences, business, and information technology. Its leaders have been pivotal in shaping the institution’s trajectory, each bringing their unique vision and expertise to the table. 

 

From H.E. Benjamin Mkapa's founding vision to H.E. Dr. Margaret Nantongo Zziwa’s progressive reforms, and from Prof. Ketrine Nyakaisiki Salati’s foundational work to Prof. Maud Kamatenesi’s entrepreneurial focus, CUU has remained steadfast in its mission to transform lives through education.  

 

As the university looks to the future, it stands as a beacon of hope and innovation in Africa’s higher education landscape, ready to tackle the challenges of the 21st century with resilience and resolve.
